Eternals has biggest MCU movie debut on Disney+
Eternals has biggest MCU movie debut on Disney+
Marvel’s Eternals was met with a polarising response from critics when it was released last November. It also demonstrated the power of Marvel to overcome lukewarm reviews. Despite a 48% rotten tomatoes score. The Eternals has managed to pull in $401.1 million globally & it looks like its success is continuing on the Disney+ streaming platform.
According to data gathered by Samba TV. The Eternals has been viewed by 2 million U.S. households in its first five days allowing it to break the record for the biggest MCU debut on the platform. The record was previously held by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Eternals opened above both Black Widow and Ten Rings globally.
When comparing this to other streaming data.
The Eternals scored less in its first five days on Disney+ than films like The Suicide Squad or The Matrix Resurrections on HBO Max. Both of those films went same day-and-date on streaming and in theatres. Their openings came in far less than Eternals, which was released exclusively in theatres to an opening of $71.2 million. In fact, the opening of Eternals topped their opening weekends combined. This allowed them to have an impressive box office run along with a performance on streaming. Audiences who were on the fence about seeing Eternals in theatres are now checking it out on streaming; and those who gave it a shot in theatres & may have been disappointed, are giving it another shot at home.
Why Eternals has proved to be a resounding success on Disney+ is actually a combination of the early critical backlash that it received compounded by fans divided opinions. There is also Disney’s 45 day exclusive theatrical release window which many are willing to wait out to stream comfortably at home on their devices.
