Floyd Mayweather welcomes a new stage. Celebrate becoming an official NASCAR owner of The Money Team Racing.

Floyd Mayweather is on a new wave.

Mayweather is the latest A-lister joining Michael Jordan and Pitbull as celebrities who have become NASCAR team owners. UFC President Dana White struck a marketing partnership deal this week with Pitbull’s Trackhouse Racing starting with the exhibition Clash in Los Angeles.

Mayweather’s team, does not have a charter that would guarantee a spot in the field. So it will run Daytona as an open car. Meaning, with 42 teams hoping to qualify for a spot in the 40-car field, Grala will have to race his way into the field.

Mayweather talked about launching a NASCAR team for years. A tweet showcasing the TMT logo was posted on March 21, 2020. There was no other social media activity until Monday when a photo of car with the caption “The wait is almost over!”

The Money Team Racing will make its debut on the Daytona 500 speedway by the end of this month. Kaz Grala, 23, has been selected as the team driver who will compete in the No. 50 Chevrolet, coined after Floyd Mayweather’s boxing record.

“I love fast cars and I love to compete. I know NASCAR will not be easy, but anything easy isn’t worth doing to me,” Floyd Mayweather said, according to NASCAR.  “…This move into auto racing seems to be a perfect fit for the Mayweather brand.”

“It’s an honor to be behind the wheel for Floyd Mayweather’s entrance into NASCAR,” Grala said in the team release, NASCAR reports. “It’s a really exciting time in our sport as it globalizes and reaches new audiences. I know Floyd is here to win, and I absolutely feel that everyone involved in this program is capable of making that happen. We know we will need some time to grow together as a new organization, but I couldn’t be more thrilled to be a part of building this team from the ground up.”

The Money Team

Mayweather’s team has experienced a few small victories such as a sponsorship from sunglass company Pit Viper and investments from StarCom Racing’s. Michael and Matt Kohler and Bill Woehlemann, who reportedly hold a minority stake in the team.

It is also important to note that The Money Team Racing reportedly “does not have a charter that would guarantee a spot in the field and will run Daytona as an open car. Meaning. with 42 teams hoping to qualify for a spot in the 40-car field, Grala will have to race his way into the field.”

In addition, Associated Press reports William Auchmoody, who serves as general manager of The Money Team Racing, says the team plans to compete in at least 15 races.

The team’s debut race is on Feb. 20.
