The Only Black Woman NBA Agent is Kyrie Irving Stepmother
Kyrie Irving decided to keep it in the family when it comes to his representation. After parting ways with Roc Nation and Jeff Wechsler, the Brooklyn Nets point guard has hired his stepmother, Shetellia Riley Irving, as his new agent. It’s believed that Shetellia’s new title makes her the only Black woman representing an active NBA player. Shetellia currently serves as the vice president of ad sales at BET.
Irving’s decision to seek new representation comes ahead of a tough season for the basketball player. He’s currently averaging 25.1 points, 5.3 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game this year. Because Irving has not adhered to New York City’s COVID-19 vaccine requirement, the Nets initially decided to sit the point guard out for the first few months of the season. According to Bleacher Report, he’s only suited up for 15 of the Nets’ 63 games.
According to Bleacher Report, the team brought Irving back into the starting lineup, and he made his season debut on Jan. 5.
It’s a great time for Irving to make sure he has an agent he trusts on his team. The point guard is currently holding a $36.6 million player option for the 2022-23 season, Because of Them We Can reports. If he chooses to waive the offer, Irving will become a free agent.
